Chapter 7

Our officers didn’t let us down, and next Sunday we got a leave of absence to go to town. That Saturday evening at dinner Inga sat at my table.

“Do you mind?” she asked, putting her dishes with all sorts of fine foods onto the table. Academy meals for future officers were quite generous, and the kitchen delighted us with a wide variety of dishes.

“Not at all, have a seat,” I responded in a neutral, friendly tone. Still, Inga was in the company with Steven and Chen, and after that conversation with Chen in the dormitory I didn’t know what to expect from her. So, I let her begin to talk.

“You’re from Titan, aren’t you?” she suddenly asked.

“Yes. I was born and lived there before the Academy.”

“Have you ever been to Ganymede before?”

“No, my first time here was when I enrolled.”

“So, you know nothing here. I grew up here. Are you going on leave?”

“Sure. I need a change of scenery.”

“If you want, I can show you the city. There’s a couple of really interesting places that you can’t possibly reach by yourself.”

Inga puzzled me with her offer. I can’t say I didn’t like her, but a new conflict with Stephen was never part of my plan. I didn’t want to hurt a girl with rejection either, so I thought I'd just ask her outright.

“Inga, will Stephen be furious to know that you’re giving me a tour of the city?”

“Stephen? Well, he probably will. But he’s not my boyfriend. So, that’s his problem. Are you afraid of his rage?” she smiled, but there was clearly interest behind the smile.

“The words 'I’m afraid’ aren’t appropriate here. I don’t care much for Stephen, but there’s a reason why I’m here, and I will take into account anything that might interfere with achieving it. If Steven starts a fight the consequences could be tragic. He’ll probably get away with it, but no one will stand up for me.”

“And because of those fears you’ll turn down the girl who asked you to join her?”

Inga clearly was prodding me, and I couldn’t figure out why she was doing this, but I didn’t think Steven sent her looking for a reason to fight. That would have been too complex for him, and Inga would hardly agree.

“I won’t say No,” I relented. “But please keep in mind what I said about Stephen.”

"I won’t tell him anything,” Inga smiled triumphantly. “See you tomorrow. At 10 sharp, in the parking lot. Will you come?”

“Most certainly” I also allowed myself a smile.

We flew somewhere out of town. From above, a vast wooded plain opened before us. After terraforming, Ganymede resembled the Earth as it was before the Industrial Revolution and the advent of technology, but as it turned out the Solar system’s largest moon still preserved something unique. Inga brought me to just such a place. The forest-covered flat hill descended to a small lake. One of its shores was high and steep, overlooking the water by a dozen meters.

“Do you
